Glasson Basin Yacht Harbour acquired by British Waterways Marinas Limited

After some 40 years of proprietorship of Glasson Basin Yacht Harbour by Peter Latham until 1993 and since then Barbara is retiring. The business has now been acquired by British Waterways Marinas Limited (BWML) one of the UK’s largest marina operators. BWML was formed in January 2004 to focus on better services to marina customers and to separate this activity from British Waterways’ role as the navigation authority.

BWML already operates 18 marinas nationwide including Hull marina on the east coast. Glasson Basin Yacht Harbour with its connection to the Lancaster canal combines the opportunity to deliver a broad range of services to both yachtsmen and inland waterways boaters alike.

Situated on the North West coast near to the historic city of Lancaster, Glasson Basin Yacht Harbour has grown in popularity with yachtsmen from the south coast, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Scotland. Under Barbara Latham’s management the business has established an excellent reputation and is widely regarded as having the most comprehensive yacht repair facilities in the North West. Barbara has built a superb team whose craftsmanship is well respected.

Glasson Basin Yacht Harbour will form part of BWML’s North West marinas which include White Bear and Galgate. Richard Byles the existing General Manager for these two marinas will take over the helm at Glasson. A keen yachtsman for over 28 years he has first hand experience of marine equipment, systems and technologies. His knowledge has been gained from not only working in the marine industry but also through building five boats himself. His last project being a classic Kim Holman design, the Twister 28 which he launched in 1996 which he has logged over five thousand sea miles. He is an active member of both Fleetwood Harbour and the River Wyre yacht clubs.

The Glasson Basin Yacht Harbour staff have a unique knowledge of the business that is both valued and respected by customers. BWML is pleased that all existing staff will be retained and hope to create additional new job opportunities in the future.
Future development plans will be released in the near future.
